The seminars and workshops are entitled THE BUSINESS OF BEING AN ARTIST because life as a professional freelance artist is a business, like any other. Learning to swap a 'fingers crossed' strategy with some simple business strategy is easier than you think and extremely empowering for the artist.
If you want boot-camp, US-style motivational hype, this course isn't for you. My style is positive yet measured; enthusiastic yet realistic.
If you're thinking of quitting, been struggling for years, frustrated with getting nowhere, thinking of taking the plunge into an artistic career and want a few basic business skills and - more importantly - affirmation that your choice to be an artist is OK, then you've come to the right place.
"I bring to this course my experience as a working artist, my learning of business psychology and management skills and my wish to help fellow artists BE HAPPY and fulfilled in their profession." - Nicola Paull, M Bus (HRM)
Aims & Objectives of the Workshops
The purpose of this workshop is to provide tactics for building a career as a freelance artist in such a way as to provide a strategy for personal empowerment. It encourages artistic professionals to take pride in their artistic identity, take responsibility for their own personal, professional and financial situation, and actively participate in their artistic community. Where Art/Drama/Dance school equips the person for the job, “The Business of Being an Artist” workshops aim to help equip the person for the career.
Workshop Rationale
Recent research indicates that artists in Australia are amongst the lowest income-generators in our community. It is the precarious lifestyle that drives people out of the profession, rather than a lack of fulfillment in the work. Fluctuations in fortune can create feelings of disempowerment over time, which can be addressed through business management and coaching techniques.
Themes
- Motivation (Are artists motivated differently from others in the workplace?)
- Vocation, Culture & Climate (What is the current situation facing artists on the Australian Industrial landscape?)
- Morale and empowerment (Questions of identity, self-esteem and social esteem can lead to feelings of disempowerment, or worse, anxiety and depression over time – some tactics for coping & fulfilling one’s human potential.)
- Strategic thinking (Making decisions, balancing life priorities and goal-setting can help build the life you want.)
- Financial management (Learn some basic financial facts, how to budget and develop a strategy for achieving your financial goals.)
